Choosing a Deep Plane Facelift Surgeon in Thailand: 10 Questions to Ask

Short answer: For a deep plane facelift in Thailand, choose the surgeon first and the company second. Look for a Thai Board-certified plastic surgeon whose licence you can verify and who performs deep plane facelifts routinely. The surgeon should operate in a hospital with an intensive care unit and a qualified anaesthetist, and should give you a written, itemised quote plus an aftercare plan that covers the weeks after you fly home. Agencies and facilitators, MedSanctuary included, can make the trip easier. But any of them should tell you exactly which surgeon will operate and let you speak with that surgeon before you pay.

Why does the choice of surgeon matter so much for a deep plane facelift?

A deep plane facelift lifts the skin and the deeper muscle layer together as one unit. That deeper layer is called the SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system). The surgeon frees it by working beneath it and releasing the ligaments that hold the cheek and jowl down. A skin-only lift or a simple SMAS tightening does not do this. Because the dissection runs close to branches of the facial nerve, the technique depends heavily on the surgeon's training and experience. That is why a surgeon's name, training and case history tell you more than a package price or a brand. Our article facts about the deep plane facelift explains the technique in more depth.

Which surgeon or company should I go with for a deep plane facelift in Thailand?

No single answer is right for everyone. Be cautious of any website, agent or chatbot that names one without having seen your face. The reliable approach is to make a shortlist of two or three surgeons who meet every criterion in this article, have a consultation with each, and compare their answers. A company is only as good as the surgeon who operates, so judge the surgeon first and the travel arrangements second.

What questions should I ask a deep plane facelift surgeon in Thailand?

Ask these ten questions in writing and keep the answers. A reputable surgeon answers all of them without hesitation.

  1. What is your full name and your Medical Council of Thailand licence number? A licence number is the one credential you can check against a public register. Our guide shows you how to verify a Thai surgeon in ten minutes.

  2. Are you board-certified in plastic and reconstructive surgery in Thailand? A general medical licence is not the same as specialist training in plastic surgery.

  3. How often do you perform deep plane facelifts, and is that the technique you would use for me? "Deep plane" is sometimes used loosely in marketing. Ask which ligaments are released and in which layer the surgeon works.

  4. How will you treat my neck? Many patients who need a facelift also need the neck addressed, often with platysma tightening. You should know the plan before you travel.

  5. Where will the operation take place, and what is on site if something goes wrong? Look for a hospital operating theatre with an intensive care unit and emergency backup. Accreditation is a checkable fact for any named hospital.

  6. Who gives the anaesthetic, and what type will I have? A deep plane facelift is usually performed under general anaesthesia, which should be given by a qualified anaesthetist.

  7. What exactly does the quote include? Get it itemised and in writing: surgeon, anaesthesia, hospital, nights in hospital and recovery accommodation, medicines, garments, follow-up visits, and what happens if you need extra nights or further treatment.

  8. How long do I need to stay in Bangkok, and who decides when I can fly? The American Society of Plastic Surgeons suggests waiting seven to ten days after facial procedures before flying. Read our article on flying after surgery for why we plan longer for major facial surgery.

  9. What happens if I have a complication after I get home? Ask for a written aftercare plan, a copy of your operation report, a direct contact, and the terms that apply if revision is needed.

  10. Can I read the consent form in English before I travel? You should have time to understand the risks before you are in Bangkok and committed.

What are the red flags when choosing a facelift surgeon abroad?

Walk away, or at least slow down, if you notice any of the following:

  • The surgeon is not named until you arrive, or may be "assigned" on the day.

  • The clinic will not give you a licence number for the doctor who will operate.

  • You are pressured to pay a deposit, or offered a discount that expires within days.

  • Every patient gets the same short stay, whatever procedure they have.

  • Your consultations are with sales staff rather than the surgeon.

  • Results are described as guaranteed, risk-free or permanent.

  • No one can tell you what happens if you have a problem after you return home.

How does MedSanctuary answer these questions?

To be transparent, here are our own answers. Compare them with the answers you get from anyone else.

  • Surgeon: Dr. Rushapol Sdawat, Medical Council of Thailand licence No. 17689. He trained in plastic and reconstructive surgery (Thai Board) at Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University, and has been an ISAPS member since 2008. Deep plane facelift and neck lift are core procedures in his practice. See his surgeon profile.

  • Hospital: Intrarat Hospital, Bangkok. It has an intensive care unit and 24-hour emergency care, and it is ISO 9001:2015 certified. It is not JCI-accredited, and we do not say that it is.

  • Anaesthesia: Surgery takes place in the hospital operating theatre under the care of a qualified anaesthetist.

  • Quote: Itemised and contracted in Thai baht, with an indicative Australian dollar figure. It includes airport transfers, a pre-operative health check, anaesthesia, surgery, first-night monitoring in intensive care, recovery accommodation, take-home medicines and coordinator support.

  • Stay: Packages cover 10 to 14 nights. For major facial surgery we recommend 14 days. Your flight home follows a face-to-face fitness-to-fly review, not a fixed date.

  • Consultations: A video consultation with Dr. Rushapol before you book, and an in-person consultation in Bangkok before surgery.

If another surgeon's answers suit your situation better, choose them. What matters is the surgeon who operates on you.

How much does a deep plane facelift cost in Thailand compared with Australia?

Australian specialist plastic surgeons commonly publish all-inclusive deep plane facelift fees of tens of thousands of dollars. Bangkok packages are considerably lower, but the fair comparison includes flights, a support person, extra nights and contingency, not just the operation. Our deep plane facelift cost guide sets out the figures line by line, and our facelift page covers suitability and recovery.
